Programs & Activities
Sunday Creek Activities
The following activities are those that are most requested by teachers visiting Sunday Creek. However, specific requests by teachers can be incorporated in the program if so desired.
Bird Study/Watching
Binoculars are available for the children to use. Worksheets, which give the names of the birds, their description, where to look and an opportunity for their own observations can be provided.
Tree Study
A look at the different types of trees that are growing in the vicinity of the centre. Examination of leaf, type of environment required, density of canopy, and timber use.
Insect Study
The students use "nature viewers" to capture and observe an insect that is magnified. This study can also be incorporated into the night activities as the Centre now has a video flex camera which can be fitted to a microscope.
Orienteering
Use of compass and map with "tree" check points about which observations can be made.
Crosscut Saw
We have two of these saws and students are shown how to use them.
Alternative Energy and Processes
We have some experiments/activities using alternative processes. The Centre itself will be used as an example of various considerations towards ecologically sound practices.
Rainforest Walk
Most groups go on our "three hour" rainforest hike which is certainly within the capabilities of primary students. There is a lot of observing, discussing, and appreciating done on the walk.
Challenge Activities
These include group problem solving and assist in developing general co-operation, lateral thinking and positive attitudes
Sensory Activities
Always done on arrival as a "lead in" to camp activities. These are many and varied and usually include our blindfold and sensory trials and an observation test.
Gold Mine Walk
A walk to the old mining area where the children are able to look down an old mine and see how the miners worked.
Quartz Crushing
The children are asked to find a piece of quartz during their stay and on the last day crush it to a fine powder. Discussion of how the miners treated their quartz to find gold is incorporated into the gold mine walk.
Quiet time in the Bush
Students are given quiet time in the bush to spend by themselves in specific locations to either:-
- appreciate the beauty of the bush
- to observe nature in silence
- to make some personal observations.
Problems of Introduced Species
Cane toad, groundsel, lantana, mist weed, red deer, wild pig.
Boiling the Billy and Damper Making
Done under strict supervision with safety strictly emphasised. Can work in with a number of camp themes.
Night Activities
These include all sorts of indoor/outdoor games, basic astronomy, a night walk, campfire, camp concert, bush dancing, nature videos and camp video, stories.
Other Activities
Yes, we do have other activities and these can be used depending on teacher requirements, As previously stated, these activities are the most popular ones used at the Centre. High School visits usually include more involved and detailed observation. Biology teachers are requested to liaise with Centre staff well in advance of the visit so that specific requirements can be catered for. All teachers are welcome to conduct their own lessons, games or activities, and assistance will be given by Centre staff.
